This was an amazing book... well written and heart wrenching true story of survival. I love to read true stories and highly recommend this one.
I liked Red Sky in Mourning. It surprised me that it is somewhat of a love story, and I enjoyed the romantic parts of it. It's also interesting what people do when they're stranded at sea, and what goes through their mind while being alone for so long wondering if they'll be rescued or become fish food. There are many heart-stopping and heartwarming moments in this memoir. The book is high quality, well-written and clearly professionally edited. The main characters were experienced sailors and led remarkable life styles. They accepted the job of delivering a boat to people in Spain, if I remember correctly, when a hurricane struck that they tried in vain to avoid. The boat was delivered to its owner but it was, of course, in shambles. There were lots of dull spaces in this book because so many days were spent stranded at sea. I suppose it's hard to spice up endless, boring days at sea when there's very little happening day after day. When there was action it was very good reading with lots of energy and drama. I had to look up the nautical terms in the definition of terms in the back of the book (very useful to landlubbers). It's worth reading because it promotes thought about what's really important in life. There's a movie made from the book, I believe it's titled Adrift.A dramatic, quick read that was our book club choice.Cynthia Cooks/Author
This incredible true story resonated with me and brought back many happy memories (and a few scary ones) of life at sea. I spent much of my youth in the early '80s sailing in the tropics. Tami however found herself faced with the unthinkable, when her fiance' Richard was lost overboard during hurricane Raymond. She was left behind to fight for her life injured and alone aboard a badly damaged sailboat. Hundreds of miles from nowhere and stranded in the middle of the Pacific ocean! Many of us might have given up. Tami with her injuries, broken heart, broken sailboat, and painful loneliness was determined to survive... and survive she did. This book was a great read from beginning to finish. Tami you did an amazing job of sharing your adventuresome spirit, your deep love, tragic loss, and tale of survival. I enjoyed the movie "Adrift" as well. You are a survivor!
If you've ever been to sea in a small boat and been in a real storm...this is the book to tell the truth. Nothing but grit. This girl/woman lived through hell. I hate the arm chair critics who tried to diminish her loveand loss of her boyfriend. These are real people, and when you're alone at sea your mind does strange things. Great account. I have so much respect for Tami.
Saw the movie then had to read the book.
I'm a big reader of the survival and adventure stories genre and this book is toward the top of my list. While I purchased it on audio CD and the author may have been better served hiring a professional reader (she lacks polish, but actually improves as the books goes on), the content and the story is simply amazing. Her personal account of tragedy, the will to survive, and the challenges she faced is one incredible. Perhaps most appealing to me was that she didn't stop when she was rescued. She continues the book forward for ten years beyond the tragedy, describing the challenges of re-integrating back into society, dealing with obsticles after the fact (from dealing with the coast guard to dealing with the her boyfriend's family), and where she ends up. This is a truly unique book from that perspective and provides insights that books like "The Long Walk", "We Die Alone", and "Endurance" fail to fully account for.
Great adventure, well told, and good learning for sailors. What to do and what not to do. Read this, and you'll be clear about the importance of learning basic celestial navigation if you're going into blue water: she would have been lost at sea without it. So great to have a sea tale by a woman!
I purchased this book after seeing the author on tv. It's a true story of courage and bravery at sea.
