Be warned, that "5th edition" is not the same book as "Volume five" that I was really looking to purchase.The assembly was horrible. The first page of the table of contents was after page 20, 2nd page of contents was after page 44. The 300 plus pages of music was out of order, jumping from pg 54 to page 160, only to find pages starting at 57 posted after page 230, etc.
After being very disappointed with Vol 3 and 4 both, Volume 5 is terrific in terms of variety of music, and tunes that are really popular for all ages. Not just older Jazz standards, but 60's 70's and 80's pop that Jazz players will have fun with. If I were only able to buy 1 Real Book , this would be it.
I have Vols. I, III & VI. This volume contains many tunes not included in the others. No lyrics but the manuscripts are easy to read. Nice book & great value.
I own the first four volumes of the new edition Real Book series which together, contain nearly 2000 charts. However, many important, popular or great tunes are missing (arrrgh). Real Book Volume V contains many of these missing charts, some pleasant surprises and some especially difficult to find but often requested gems.In my opinion, this is the best Real Book compilation since Volume I. This and the other 4 volumes (I bought them all) add up to an absolutely superb collection of popular standards. So far I have found all I tried.
Not my favorite in the "Real Book" series, but still a worthwhile addition. I have this version on my Kindle, so I can use any of my tablets on the keyboard to play from.
I play these tunes on the piano and this volume is filled with some great numbers! I've not been disappointed with any of these collections yet. I have all 5 volumes. I like playing from them because it allows plenty of room for the musician to improvise.
The book had tunes that were not in my other books.
