I was expecting a lot more based on the reviews but I am starting to think those must have been from friends and family members. This book is poorly written and the "outrageous, hilarious adventures" consist of stories like: - the motor on the boat broke and one mechanic wanted to charge a lot but then he found a mechanic that charged much less. Hilarious! - the workers on his island only spoke Spanish, so he secretly learned Spanish so he could better communicate with them. Outrageous! If you are interested in the excruciating minutiae of how a rich guy built a house on his own private island, then this is definitely the book for you.

“Welcome to Paradox!” A great friend of mine always says that. He lives in the same part of Panama as Ian Usher, the author of this book.I borrowed his words because they so aptly illustrate the best thing about Ian Usher’s book. His dream becomes a reality, yet somehow it’s not what he imagined. Sometimes it is far worse, but more often it surpasses his ideal—only in highly unexpected ways. When most people picture life in a tropical paradise, do they see themselves homesteading—clearing land and slaying chickens for dinner? I don’t think so.And then there's the matter of what to do with your days once your building project is finished. As Ian points out, early retirement can sometimes arrive too soon.I love the way Ian Usher writes. I applaud what he leaves out and what he chooses to put in. He always seems to put in the right number of life-affirming anecdotes. I’ve decided he is bent on a mission to bring the human family closer together, even if he doesn’t know it yet. So, go ahead and join the party! I was glad I did. After I finished this new book of his, I realized once more that everything was right with my world. Thank you, Ian Usher.

Ian tells a good story, and the most enjoyable part of it is that it's all true. Ah, this is the life in Panama as an expat. Ian has a few years living in Panama under his belt, and those that are even remotely interested in the Caribbean side of Panama, and specifically Bocas del Toro (even if an island purchase is not in your plan) should make his book part of their research on the country.Like Ian, I've personally experienced the ups and downs of expat-hood in Panama myself, and published a guide to Panama (The Gringo Guide to Panama - What to Know Before You Go in 2012 on Amazon. There's no doubt that Ian and his family's experiences and their Lessons Learned can be useful if you're looking into moving to Panama or relocating to Panama as an expat - especially from an English speaking country like the U.S., Canada or the U.K.I'll be watching with interest to see what adventures Ian and his family continue to pursue!

This is a quick and fun read from a writer who makes you feel like you are part of the adventure. I have never been to Panama, Bocas Town, or Rana Azul but felt as though I was living the experience as I read the book. The tales of comedic and troublesome adventures are interesting and fun to read. Although I would probably never choose a remote island lifestyle, I am adding Bocas Town and Rana Azul to my bucket list of places to visit (or stay for ???)"Every place can be a paradise - you just gotta figure out which one is yours"PS: This seems a bit like a new episode of the infamous "Gilligan's Island" with the misadventures of main character (Ian) having an alarming resemblance to those of Gilligan on the popular sitcom. Maybe the island should be named "GilligIAN's Island"

I really enjoyed reading Mr. Usher's latest book, about how he built a house and set up a home, but more importantly, contributed to a vibrant community in a fairly remote location. Lots of great stories, related in breezy, bite-size chapters. I found myself retelling several of the funnier (mis)adventures to my family and friends. What will he be up to next? Stay tuned...

Paradise Delayed is a well written, amusing collection of anecdotes about setting up home in Bocas del Toro. Ian gives the reader a feeling that you have just shared a beer or two at Rana Azul and heard all of these stories first hand. You also get the impression that there are many more stories that for one reason or another, just didn't quite make the cut. Reading this, it made me feel lucky that he stayed alive long enough to write it, given the danger he seemingly put himself in some time. Hopefully there is more to come one day about this adventure or the next as it doesn't seem that he will be stopping any time soon.

I absolutely loved this book! There is so much info for anyone considering the move to Bocas, as we are. It was fun reading about people we have met on trips there and people we hope to meet in the near future.Thank you Ian!PS Saw your island on HGTV before I read the book so that was another sweet little discovery.

I just finished reading paradise delayed and it was a most enjoyable book. thank you for the opportunity to read it. Don't let the cover mislead you.
