A very nicely designed and produced overview into all the aspects of maple sugaring, from the biology of the trees to how to make delicious foods with the syrup. My husband and I are hoping to move to Vermont upon retirement, and we are also hoping to find some land that has a small sugar bush on it. Not to go pro! but just to make some for our own use. This book is a good overview of what that would mean, and I am delighted to learn that it's probably practical as long as we don't go overboard!I have to give praise to the entire design of the book. The basic info is there, and easy to find, and organized beautifully- aesthetically as well as practically. The pictures are beautiful and often informative- although I would have preferred pictures of the result of the recipes with the recipes, rather than pictures of historical maple syrup containers, fun as those are. The recipes themselves look solid, and when reading them I almost never asked why waste maple syrup in this what with all the other strong flavors???In the comparison of maple syrup to other sweeteners, I found the author's rivalry with honey to be entertaining, especially since we have beehives! I think there is room for both!Another reviewer said that this book didn't give enough information to actually make syrup. I respectfully disagree. The info is there, but it does appear to be a somewhat fussy process, at least for quantities larger than what can easily be managed on a home stove. But it talks about that!I'm glad to add it to our library of "once we move to VT" books, and also recommend it to anyone who loves maple syrup and wants to know more about how it is made, its history, etc.
The best and informative book for the do it yourself sugarer. From tree to sap to syrup this book is the one for the landowner keeping the production small and efficient
got this as a gift and it was enjoyed by all. A nice coffee table book and come march we will see if the info holds up!
Love the book, lots of information on maple tree taping and turning sap into syrup. Also maple recipes and history
Good Book
This is the best book I have found on sugaring. It has a grading system, how to, about the trees and recipes. I bought one for a friend and had to buy one so when visitors come we can explain what we do better.
Great
"Maple Sugar, From Sap to Syrup" is a highly polished and well constructed overview of sugaring history and technique. The basics are well covered, including maple tree varieties and sap attributes. Even a backyard sapmaker would have little to search for elsewhere. Entertaining and a good value for the price.
This is a fantasticbook, well written and definately worth reading.
