This is quite a hefty book and worth the price. It is nothing fancy. Due to the size and binding, I'm a little concerned about it falling apart over time and use.Update: After looking more, we have realized that this does NOT include ALL of Beethoven's Sonatas. Why is it labeled "COMPLETE"?? My son's piano teacher was looking for a specific sonata of Beethoven's -- and it was one of the few not included.Disappointed.
The ring binding is SUCH a plus here. No more fighting pages which refuse to lay flat. The edition is clearly printed and easy to read. The paper seems to be thick enough for the size of the volume. I like the editorial notes as well. I would wholeheartedly recommend this edition.
This is a massive tome. It contains the Schirmer's editor's notes. The spiral binding is essential in a book this size and it does lay flat without any problem. I was concerned that turning pages quickly might be problematic, but that has not been an issue. (No, the issue continues to be getting the right finger on the right key at the right time, but I can't blame this book for that.)
I suggest that this collection be divided into 3 volumes; one volume is simply too thick: it falls off the piano music stand. I paid to have it divided and bound into 3 separate volumes, with the covers laminated. These smaller volumes are far more convenient. Otherwise it has been fine and I am studying pieces from each of the 3 volumes.
I'm quite glad to have this in my small piano music library but the printing quality is actually pretty poor. If I thought they had good copies available (meaning mine is simply a bad specimen) and it would be easy to swap for, I would do it. I don't believe that's likely though, so I'll just hang on to this as a secondary reference. I'll attach a photo of part of page 1, Sonata No. 8 “Pathétiqueâ€, 1st Movement, and also a photo of the same piece of page but from a home laser print from the mutopiaproject. I realize that they come from different texts and sources but put all that aside for a moment and look at how the beams of the semihemidemisemiquavers (128th notes) blur and blob together. They are all still legible (kind of???) but not really acceptable if I wanted this collection simply for its beauty.
Wonderful book filled with well printed Sonatas. I agree that the plastic comb binding needs to be replaced immediately. This binding is overflowing and through extensive use will fall apart. But it looks like an easy fix with some wire bindings and cutting the book in thirds (about 200 pages each) would work well. Otherwise this is really excellent! Excited to really dig into Beethoven.
Really convenient to have everything in one volume, especially with the comb binding! Service was prompt, too.
