Review
Though the practices of US institutions are its main focus, this primer provides an initiation into many of the universal mysteries of museum administration--from budgeting to building management--and does it as painlessly as possible. (Museum Practice Magazine, Spring 2004)This is an excellent resource tool for museum professionals of all geographical backgrounds, areas of expertise and levels of experience....Clear, concise and comprehensive, this book is highly recommended for anyone wishing to begin a museum career or wanting to expand their existing knowledge base. (Jim Galvao Muse, May/June 2004)One of the best books on the subject, Museum Administration easily finds relevance in any senior-level museum studies course. (Journal Of The Illinois State Historical Society)Deserves a place on the reference shelf of every historical organization. (The Annals Of Iowa)Genoways and Ireland have provided a good introduction to museum administration and the reference list for each of the chapters provides adequate support for museum neophytes and professionals to improve their skills in museum management. (Museums Australia)The book is studded with insights that had me thinking about the profession in new ways. I can recommend it as a primer or reference tool to anyone working in a museum or serving on a museum board. It would be helpful to anyone training interns or to staff new to museum work. . . . Museum Administration makes an excellent text for any museum studies program. . . .Well written and concise in the treatment of each subject area, Museum Administration offers the proverbial twenty pounds of potatoes in a ten pound sack. . . . Keep a copy by your desk, and consider it a trusted colleague you can count on for sage advice anytime. (The Public Historian)

As a student in a museum studies graduate program, I've enjoyed this book. There are hints of sarcasm that can help ease the dullness of subjects like managing loans. As dry as some of the material can be, Genoways and Ireland do a great job covering the various aspects included in the running of a museum. I would highly suggest this book to anyone in the museum field.
This was an assigned text so probably one of the better texts available in the opinion of my professor...but it was published in 2002 and has too much outdated information. The general principles and theories are well covered and exercises are interesting. The writing is very clear and relatively jargon-free. A minor quibble is the layout: pages of widely spaced chapter endnotes which should have been condensed in a much smaller type.
This book is filled with great examples, exercises and information. It makes you think about circumstances and situations that you would never ordinarily even consider. Gave me a "rounded" impression of the admistrative needs within the museum "world". Really good for someone like me, who has never worked in a museum, per se, but now finds themselves (luckily) working in a related field. Highly recommend.
