About the Author
Dr. David Holstein grew up in the first row of his father's church. He had a tremendous love of sports growing up, particularly basketball. He was fortunate enough to play organized basketball from the seventh grade through college, but realizing in high school he was not going to fulfill his dream of playing in the NBA, he concentrated on staying in the sport through coaching. He was groomed from the "ground roots" by being an assistant coach, head coach, and athletic director in his hometown junior college. In 2001, his professional journey culminated in a doctorate of ethical leadership as part of the first cohort at Olivet Nazarene University. Now a two-time retiree (Kankakee Community College and Palm Beach State College), Dr. Holstein lives in southeast Florida with his wife, Cynthia. The Holsteins are non-denominational Christians and have five grown children.

Make that all coaches.In fact, make that all leaders. If you are a leader in any walk of life: - a coach, a business leader, military officer, a parent – this book will equip you to become a better one.This book really spoke to me as a Christian pastor. As I read it, I found myself jotting down ideas for how I can improve my leadership in the church.Chapter 6 is particularly rich in this regard.David also reminded me that the church – Christ’s body - is a team. God has designed the body of Christ so that each member of the team would have a unique gift to offer the rest of the team. God gave more abundant honor in this regard to those members whom others deemed less honorable (ie, less talented).In chapter 8, athletes say what they need from coaches. Parts were quite moving. Many revealed the aloneness that many “Generation Y†young people have because of the family and social fractures in their lives. There’s a lot more at stake than just the final score of the game.And I love how David explained the principle of freedom through discipline.It also doesn’t hurt that David includes two of my favorite coaches of all time: John Wooden and Vince Lombardi!I am especially grateful that David showed how all of the virtues and principles of leadership find their source ultimately in the Bible and the gospel of Jesus Christ.In the end, we see that the ultimate leader is Jesus Christ. He leads people from death to life.
